Foods that Help Relieve Arthritis

Arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints and it can affect people of all ages, sex and backgrounds. It can be a devastating condition. Fortunately eating a proper diet with certain foods can help, there are many foods that combat the symptoms of arthritis by reducing inflammation and some may even reduce pain. Studies have shown that diet plays an important part in the severity of arthritis symptoms.


Here are some of the certain foods that research has suggested may help relieve arthritis related pain and inflammation and may improve your overall health!


Fish – Salmon, herring, trout and sardines are high in Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D both have been shown to have excellent anti-inflammatory effects.  


Olive Oil – Olive Oil contains both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and it also has anti-inflammatory effects, reducing the swelling of joints. Studies have shown that it may slow progression of arthritis and ease arthritis symptoms. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil has the highest amounts of these great nutrients.


Ginger – The chemicals within ginger have shown to reduce inflammation in the joints. Studies have also shown that ginger may reduce joint pain in some people as well.


Walnuts – Walnuts are high in protein, low in saturated fats and contain a different type of Omega-3, studies have shown they can reduce the symptoms of arthritis. While other nuts also contain some benefits, walnuts seems to be the best choice for those that suffer from arthritis.


Berries – Berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and have arthritis fighting properties. They decrease inflammation and can boost your overall health. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and cranberries are all excellent choices.


Cherries – Cherries have powerful antioxidants and have excellent arthritis fighting properties. In particular studies have shown that natural tart cherry juice can significantly decrease symptoms of arthritis and reduced inflammation.


Broccoli – Broccoli is full of vitamins and calcium and it is one of the healthiest foods in general. It has shown to reduce inflammation and could also help block arthritis development. In addition to broccoli, kale, Swiss chard, spinach and Brussel sprouts are all great choices for reliving arthritis symptoms and overall health.


Green Tea – Green tea is high in antioxidants, is high in nutrients and has shown to reduce inflammation.


Whole Grains -  Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat or whole wheat are much better for you then processed grains. Choose whole wheat pasta or brown rice instead of white and whole grain breads over white bread. These will add much need nutrients, have more antioxidants and help with overall health.


Eating foods that are nutritious, have high antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties can help with the swelling and pain that comes with arthritis. Along with relieving arthritis pain a proper diet will help with your overall health!
