Curcumin is the active ingredient in the spice turmeric. This golden spice is often used in Indian food such as curries and has been used in traditional medicine. Research has shown that curcumin may have great beneficial properties for arthritis sufferers and has become a popular supplement for those with arthritis. Curcumin has been found to block enzymes that cause joint inflammation which causes pain and stiffness. Research has shown that those that took curcumin had less joint pain and less severe arthritis symptoms. It’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are a great addition to those with arthritis.
While using turmeric as a spice in your food will give you some of the benefits of curcumin it may not be enough to have a therapeutic effect as only 2% to 9% is actually curcumin. If you do choose to add this spice to your food remember to add some black pepper as well since they will help with absorption.
A curcumin supplement is by far the best way to receive a proper amount of curcumin to reduce arthritis inflammation and pain. Many curcumin supplements have black pepper (piperine) in it to assist in absorption ensuring you receive the best benefits from taking a curcumin supplement.
Curcumin’s natural anti-inflammatory properties can be a great addition to help relieve arthritis pain and swelling!
