Alternative Treatments for Arthritis

The pain, swelling and stiffness resulting from arthritis can make simple every day tasks challenging. Although there are a number of conventional treatments there are also natural alternative treatments that ease pain and make you feel better.

Massage – A gentle massage can help relieve pain, help reduce joint stiffness and this will improve your range of motion. Avoid a massage if it is during an arthritis flare up as the area may be very sensitive, however your body will tell you if it feels good or increases the pain.

Acupuncture -  Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting small, thin needles at specific points in a person’s body. It claims to relieve pain, help relieve illnesses and stimulate muscles, nerves and connectives tissues as well as improving blood flow. Acupuncture may help relieve arthritis pain and improve joint function.  

Tai Chi – Tai Chi originally was a form of self defense. It involves a series slow, focused movements with deep breathing.  Tai Chi exercise has shown to improve, function and range of motion for arthritis suffers as well as reducing joint pain. Research has shown that Tai Chi can also improve sleep quality, relieve stress, improve balance and improve over all mood.

Yoga – Yoga combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and meditation. Research has shown that yoga improves stiffness and joint pain associated with arthritis in addition to reducing stress and relaxation. Yoga intensity can vary so make sure to start with gentle simple moves.

Physical Therapy – Professional help with a physical therapist can help relieve painful, swollen joints. They can show proper positioning and body movement that relive arthritis pain and improve range of motion and assist with daily living. In addition physical therapists can recommend assistive devices such as braces that can help relieve stress on joints.
