Is There A Correlation Between Arthritis And Diet?
There are many types of arthritis, and yet there is typically no “diet” which an arthritis patient can be placed on. While diabetics are given much information on the foods they should eat, the foods they should avoid and portion size, arthritis patients do not have an arthritis diet to lean on. Some believe that there is a connection between arthritis and diet, while others do not.
Many assume that there is no relationship between arthritis and diet. Yet, the food anyone eats plays an important role in the health of their body and their ability to fight off illness. Everyone should eat a nutritious, well balanced diet for optimal health. One thing we do know is that obesity can play a role in arthritis. Excessive weight can stress the joints and inflict damage on an already afflicted area of the body.
The study of arthritis and diet is still in the early stages. However some believe that certain antioxidants and vitamins provide pain relief and reduce inflammation. In addition, most doctors now recommend glucosamine for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine has been shown to reduce inflammation and to slow down the progression of joint deterioration in some arthritis patients. Also, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and selenium may also be a great addition to those with arthritis as some believe these reduce inflammation.
A well balanced diet is important for everyone and should consist of whole grains, vegetables and fruits. While foods that are high in sugar, salt and saturated fat should be consumed in moderation.
While more studies need to be preformed on the relationship between arthritis and diet, eating a well balanced diet is a smart choice, even for those without arthritis. What you consume does play a role in your health.
